Course Aims
Day 1 – Constructing a pendant using a basket style claw setting with wire and an 8mm brilliant cut stone.
Day 2 – Making a solid claw setting with tube as the seat. ( This can be a pendant or ring) Using a 5mm brilliant cut stone.
Experience level required:
• Intermediate/ previous stone setting experience such as tube setting, collet setting or at lease cabochon setting.
• Soldering skills are essential.



Hayley Kruger is a jeweller, maker and tutor having worked and taught extensively in the areas of stone setting, jewellery making and design.
She works as a fine jeweller from her studio at the New Brewery Arts centre in Cirencester.
Mostly working on bespoke commissions in gold, platinum and silver.
Equipment
YOU ARE ADVISED TO BRING THESE ITEMS IF YOU HAVE THEM, BUT I WILL HAVE SOME SPARES ON HAND:
- Thermolock or Polymorph
- Needle files
- Pin Vice
- Pliers and other small equipment pieces like tweezers
- torch and soldering equipment
- Magnifier/optivisor if needed for detailed stone setting
- Sand paper
- 5mm ball burr or stone setting burr (I will have spares)
- Square pusher
- Claw pusher if you have one (not essential)
- Feel free to bring your own silver wire and tube if you have it -If you are bringing your own stones they must be round and ideally 5mm and 8mm wide.
Materials:
- 1mm square wire – roughly 40mm for basket setting
- 1mm round wire – Roughly 50mm for basket setting
- 5mm wide tube for solid claw setting
- 0.8mm x 50mm round wire for solid claw setting
- (If you would like to make a ring you will need to bring round or D wire for this. It will not be a main part of the teaching, but it can be done if time allows.)
- A mixed bundle of square and round wire, 5mm tube, 8mm cubic zirconia stones, 5mm cubic zirconia stones.
- A full bundle will cost approximately £15. Cost tbc
How course will be taught:
Step by step. There will be two techniques taught over two days.
Handouts are NOT provided and attendees are encouraged to take their own notes.
This course will be taught in step by step instructions, individual assistance, group demonstrations.
No preparation is required before hand, photos and videos are permitted for personal use.
