About Barbara Spence: I have been working as a jeweller since 2010. I make modern geometric jewellery with a mid-century influence using contrasts to highlight designs. The moon lockets are a good example of my work with their modern minimalist design and contrasting textures.

Course Aims

In this course students will produce a finished silver locket in individual design, on a silver chain with handmade findings.

The focus is on creating a unique design for the lid and rivet of the locket. There will be a lot of experimentation with different texturing techniques including hammering and rolling with different materials. The techniques for completing the locket include soldering and riveting.

The course is suitable for a wide range of students. It is open to relative beginners though experience of soldering and annealing is necessary.. However more experienced students can take it much further, incorporating stone setting or making their own locket base.
We will do experiments on copper sheet. The final piece will be made from silver. If students have gold or stones they want to use they can probably use these (please check with me first)

Equipment

Barbara will bring Silver locket bases. These are available in two sizes:16mm diameter and 22mm diameter. Silver chain; Cooksons WVT F00 and WVR M00, students can bring their own but should check the size, Silver wire for rivets and jump rings Copper sheet.

Students need to bring 1mm sterling silver sheet 3cmx3cm, 1.5 mm round silver wire 10cm and materials for creating texture : wire/gauze/textured paper/shapes.

Who this class is for: Everyone including relative beginners.

The course will be taught by group demonstrations for each of the major steps and give individual support as required.
There will be handouts that will go through all the processes and provide diagrams where required. These can be used as an aide-memoire during the session and a reminder after the course.
Students need to collect materials and/or equipment to create texture.
They should also consider if there are particular elements they want to incorporate into the locket design and whether the locket is for a specific person/event/memory.

Students can contact Barbara if they have any particular ideas they want to incorporate into the design, if they want to include stones or if they are planning to use their own chain they should definitely contact Barbara so that she can check that it is feasible.
